Safeguarding Statement

At Dyscalculia Tutor (https://dyscalculiatutor.co.uk), the safety, wellbeing, and emotional security of every child I work with is my highest priority.

As a sole trader providing specialist tutoring for children with dyscalculia, maths difficulties, and maths anxiety, I am committed to creating a safe, supportive, and nurturing learning environment where every learner feels valued, respected, and able to thrive.

My Commitment to Safeguarding

I believe that:

  • All children have the right to learn in a safe and supportive environment
  • The welfare of the child is always the most important consideration
  • Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, including tutors, parents, and professionals involved in a child’s life

I take all concerns about a child’s welfare seriously and will act promptly and appropriately in line with UK safeguarding guidance.

Safer Practice in Tutoring

To ensure a safe learning environment, I:

  • Hold an enhanced DBS check appropriate for working with children
  • Maintain professional safeguarding awareness and update my training regularly
  • Work in line with UK safeguarding guidance, including Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) principles
  • Ensure all tutoring takes place in a professional, structured setting (either in-person in my designated learning space or via agreed secure arrangements)
  • Avoid any unnecessary one-to-one isolation risks by maintaining clear professional boundaries
  • Keep all communication with children and families professional and appropriate
  • Do not engage in unsupervised or informal communication outside agreed channels

Recognising and Responding to Concerns

As a specialist tutor working closely with children, I may sometimes become aware of concerns relating to wellbeing, emotional distress, or safeguarding.

If I have a concern about a child’s safety or welfare, I will:

  • Record concerns factually and securely
  • Follow appropriate safeguarding procedures
  • Share concerns with relevant professionals or safeguarding services where necessary (such as schools or local safeguarding partners)
  • Always act in the best interests of the child

Where possible, I will also communicate appropriately with parents or carers, unless doing so would place the child at further risk.

Working with Parents and Carers

I work in partnership with parents and carers and believe open communication is essential to supporting each child effectively.

Parents are encouraged to share relevant information that may support their child’s learning, wellbeing, or emotional needs so that tutoring can be tailored appropriately.

Safer Recruitment & Working Alone

As a sole trader, I operate independently. I do not employ additional staff or tutors within my business.

This means:

  • All responsibility for safeguarding practice sits directly with me
  • I take full responsibility for maintaining safe working practices at all times
  • I ensure professional boundaries are always maintained

Child-Centred Approach

Many of the children I support can experience maths anxiety, low confidence, or additional learning needs.

I am committed to:

  • Creating a calm, non-judgemental learning environment
  • Building trust and confidence over time
  • Ensuring every child feels safe to make mistakes and learn at their own pace

Reporting Concerns

If I believe a child is at risk of harm, I will follow appropriate safeguarding procedures and may contact relevant external agencies such as:

  • Local authority safeguarding teams
  • The NSPCC
  • School safeguarding leads (where applicable)

Policy Review

This safeguarding statement is reviewed regularly and updated in line with current UK safeguarding guidance.
